setting to establish values within a work of literature. For example, the country may be a place
of virtue and peace or one of primitivism and ignorance. In the novel, Heart of Darkness, such a setting plays a significant role. In a well-written essay analyze how the
country setting functions in the work as a whole.
In some works of literature,
a character who appears briefly, or does not appear at all, is a significant
presence. Based on the novel, Heart of
Darkness, write an essay in which you show how such a character functions
in the work. You may wish to discuss how the character affects action, theme,
or the development of other characters. Avoid plot summary.
