Wednesday's Practice Exam

March 21, 2011
The AP Literature Practice Exam will be held in Ms. VanBlaricum's classroom, room 1613 (the first floor of the Arts building).
You should arrive at 7:45AM so that we can start the exam at 8AM.  Please arrive on time so that you get the full three hours to test.

You need to email me TONIGHT OR TOMORROW MORNING if you ARE going to take the practice test, so that I can send your name to security and the administration so that they let you in the building.

Commenting on Voicethreads this Weekend

March 18, 2011
I have copied all of your Voicethread links into the below post titled "Heart of Darkness Voicethreads."  A number of you need to change the "privacy" settings on your Voicethread before your peers can comment though.  PLEASE DO THIS IMMEDIATELY.  The way you change the privacy settings is to open up your Voicethread as if you were going to edit it and look at the bottom of the screen.  There should be a link that says "Publishing Options."  Click the link and check off the first two boxes: "Allow Anyone to View" and "Allow Anyone to Comment."  Then press SAVE.  Now your peers should be able to comment.

Everyone should post at least ONE comment on each Voicethread (that is 8 total - as there are 8 groups).  Your comments should be substantive and go beyond the aesthetics of the presentation.  (Suggestions for comments: focus on content, what you learned, how it made you think, and/or interpret Heart of Darkness in a different way.)

This is your only weekend homework.  BUT, remember that you need to continue reading your independent reading book.  Your completed data sheet is due a week from this Monday - Monday, April 4th.  Next week we will revisit long term assignments and set up a time for one-on-one conferences in preparation for your midterm/portfolio.

What is due on Friday?
1) Poetry response
2) Your understanding and knowledge of Week 6 vocabulary words (remember that the sentence structure is your choice)
3) ALL projects are due (meaning uploaded to Voicethread).  Only two groups will present on Friday, but EVERYONE needs to be prepared.  When you have uploaded your PowerPoint to Voicethread please share your presentation with ME.  You will have to type in my email address (kleekeenan@cpsd.us) and name.  Please also copy and paste the link in an email to me.

**If you were absent today, please register for an account at www.voicethread.com.  Only one person in your group needs to upload the PowerPoint onto Voicethread.  Everyone, on their own accounts, will have to read through and comment on ALL of the presentations.  This is your only homework over the weekend, so please make sure to DO IT!

Monday, March 14th

March 14, 2011
We are meeting in the MAC lab again this week.  Thanks for all of your hard work today ( and this semester by the way).  I look forward to reading your Heart of Darkness essays this week.

Please continue working on your school of literary theory presentation.  Your only other homework this week will be to study for your vocabulary quiz on Wednesday and to write your poetry response for Friday.  The sentence structure for your vocabulary quiz this week is your choice.

Scanner Broken!

March 12, 2011
My scanner seems to be malfunctioning and I won't be able to upload the critical essays that I promised to certain individuals in the class.  I'll copy them for you Monday morning.  Sorry!

I have listed the titles below for you in case you want to try and find them online:
Ian Watt, "Impressionism and Symbolism in Heart of Darkness"
Patrick Brantlinger, "Imperialism, Impressionism, and the Politics of Style"
Marianna Torgovnick, "Primitivism and the African Woman in Heart of Darkness"
Jeremy Hawthorn, "The Women of Heart of Darkness"
Andrew Michael Roberts, "Masculinity, Modernity, and Homosexual Desire"

Friday, March 11

March 11, 2011
Happy Friday!

Over the weekend please work on the following:
1) Heart of Darkness short explications (the document is titled: Literary Take Home quiz - attached in the previous post)
2) Moodle posts
3) Prepare notes for your in class essay on Monday (MEET IN THE MAC LAB AGAIN)
4) Review your school of literary theory.  The Literary Criticism Packet that I handed out today is attached here.  And, once again, I have changed some of the due dates for this project to give you more time to ensure a better end product.
You will have two class periods to work on this project: Tuesday, March 15th and Wednesday, March 16th.
The final product - your PowerPoint uploaded to Voicethread - is due on Friday, March 18th.
